Online travel agencies still drive the majority of room nights for independent hotels and resorts in India. Yet walk through a hundred listings on any platform and you will find the same missed opportunities — stale photos, incomplete amenities, rates that contradict the hotel's own website, and reviews nobody has answered in months.
OTA optimisation is not about paying the channel more commission. It is about giving the platform's ranking algorithm every reason to show you first, and giving the guest every reason to click "Book" once they arrive.
1. Complete the listing — all of it
Every OTA scores listing completeness. Fill in every amenity field, every policy, every room attribute. A property with 98% content score will out-rank a near-identical one sitting at 70%, even at the same price.
2. Photography is your conversion rate
Lead with the single image that sells your destination — the valley view, the riverside deck, the pool at dusk. Then follow a logical order: exterior, signature room, bathroom, dining, experiences. Twenty strong images outperform sixty average ones.
3. Rate parity, every day
Platforms penalise properties whose rates are undercut elsewhere. Audit parity weekly across OTAs and your own booking engine. Where you want to reward direct bookers, do it with value-adds rather than a visible lower rate.
4. Build a rate ladder, not a single rate
Offer a non-refundable rate, a flexible rate and a package rate. The spread lets price-sensitive guests and last-minute planners both find a reason to book, and it lifts your average daily rate without touching the base price.
5. Answer every review within 48 hours
Response rate is a ranking factor and a trust signal. Thank the positive ones briefly, address the negative ones with specifics and a fix. Future guests read your replies more carefully than the reviews themselves.
6. Use promotions deliberately
Early-bird, mobile-only and last-minute deals exist to fill specific gaps. Switch them on for the dates that need them and off when demand returns. Permanent discounts simply train the market to wait.
7. Read the dashboard weekly
Page views, conversion rate, cancellation rate and ranking position tell you exactly which of the above is working. A 30-minute weekly review is usually the difference between a listing that drifts and one that climbs.
A listing is a storefront. Nobody would leave their lobby unlit for six months — yet that is exactly what an unmanaged OTA page looks like to a guest.
